My wife and I are enjoying a brief stay in Maui to celebrate our anniversary. Each time I come to Hawaii, I try to check out the local slack key guitar scene, and renew the promise I made to myself to learn ki ho'alu.
Checking the net, I was excited to hear about the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar concert series, taking place at the Ritz-Carlton. I was saddened to learn that the concerts are on Tuesdays, the only night I won't be on the island. Oh no!
Somewhat disconsolate, I continued poking around. I came upon Keola Beamer's site. Keola is one of my favorite players. I saw him a few years ago at the Stanford Performances series, and recently bought his latest CD, Soliloquy.
I was thrilled to learn that Keola offers online slack key lessons! He has a free sample lesson to give you an idea how it works. You download the tablature file (a PDF), then listen to the recording of Keola himself playing the piece you're trying to learn.
There's never been a better reason to have high speed internet in your vacation hotel room! I've listened and learned. I can do it! Mahalo, Keola.
