I've read that most research studies in the social sciences yield intuitively obvious results. Wait, were those the results of a research study in the social sciences?
Anyway, that was the feeling I had when I read this piece in today's San Francisco Examiner. It cites a study that claims (no!) that MUNI buses are getting slower by the year. The average speed is a blistering 8 miles per hour, compared with 18 mph for Boston and 14 for New York City. And, it's a trend: the buses have slowed an average of one percent per year for the last 20 years.
None of this inspires a high level of cognitive dissonance for me...
Ridership on MUNI buses has declined by 12% over the period, according to the study, which also notes
Increasing bus speed is essential to attracting more riders, which would significantly cut operating costs.
I don't know how much MUNI paid for this study, but it was worth every penny!
